Mediation
As a proud Associate member of the Civil Mediation Council we offer workplace mediation as a form of conflict resolution.
How can mediation help us?
Disputes within the workplace can arise from a variety of issues including:
• Performance issues
• Bullying and harassment claims
• Breakdown in the manager/employee relationship
Often, employers direct employees to the grievance procedure which can result in lengthy meetings, formal proceedings and potentially very expensive outputs.
A common way to resolve a workplace dispute is with the assistance of an independent facilitator or mediator, who can support the road to resolution either face-to-face or virtually.
As an accredited workplace mediator, I can support your teams to open dialogue to mediate between parties and come to a suitable agreement that works for everyone.
What does the mediation process look like?
So you have identified a need for mediation or facilitated conversations within the business but don’t know what to expect of the process, here I lay out the core elements.
1. You have contacted me and spoken through the need to mediate and I have explained to you what you could expect in terms of duration, costs, and results. I will then provide you with an agreement for singing and an upfront fee. Upon receipt of the relevant fee to mediate, a document will be provided to the key contact (line manager or HR representative) to complete with a brief overview of the dispute to their knowledge.
Following this, I will arrange to have a one-on-one meeting with each party. This should be around 45 – 60 minutes long. During this meeting, I would get to understand an overview of key issues impacting the relationship and ensure each party is open to mediation. I would issue each party with an agreement to enter into mediation – which needs signing prior to mediation day.
2. Mediation day is here – here I would attend a suitable location (your site or location of mutual agreement) and set up, I would have prepared in advance the arrival times for each party and begin private discussions. At various points during the day, where deemed suitable, private and joint discussions may occur.
Most mediations take at least a full day, there may be times when we are very close to a resolution and therefore the day is slightly extended. But I never give up, and if it means ending the day on a positive – that is what I will do! Wherever viable, the day will end with each party taking a breather whilst I write up the agreements to which each party should stick to. At the end of this, each party will be invited back to sign the agreement and move on with a better working relationship.
3. Mediation day is over – what next? It doesn’t end at the end of mediation day, I will follow up with the business and the individual parties to see how things are going and offer any further support or guidance as necessary.
